Hi, I’m Candice Montgomery. My friends call me “Cam.” I’m a Los Angeles transplant, now living in Seattle, WA, where most of my time gets spent teaching dance, watching anime, educating children, writing Young Adult books, reading romance and complaining about the weather.
I write YA for me. But that’s only the beginning. That “for me” part is what lives inside my head. Once I get it on the page, it’s for the Black kids. The mixed Black kids and the queer Black kids and the ghetto Black kids and the Black kids that need to see us be antagonists and also protagonists. I do it for the kids that feel like they’re both of those things sometimes. I write YA to break down systemic barriers that keep us from moving forward, upward. That keep us thinking the sky is our limit.
I write YA for me. But also for the Black kids.
